Rule 01
Moisturize Daily
Apply a light oil (jojoba, argan, or castor) or a braid spray to your scalp and the length of your braids every single day. Dry braids frizz faster and cause breakage at the roots.
Recommended: Jojoba oil, braid spray, or leave-in conditioner mist
Rule 02
Sleep Protected
Always cover your braids with a satin or silk bonnet at night, or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases absorb the moisture from your braids and create friction that accelerates frizz and loosening.
Recommended: Satin bonnet, silk sleep cap, or satin pillowcase
Rule 03
Cleanse Gently
Wash your scalp every 2–3 weeks using a diluted sulfate-free shampoo or a braid cleanser. Apply directly to the scalp, massage gently, rinse thoroughly, and always air-dry completely before going to bed. Avoid heavy scrubbing.
Recommended: Diluted sulfate-free shampoo, ACV rinse
Rule 04
Avoid Tension
Do not pull your braids into tight ponytails, buns, or updos — especially when they are freshly installed. Tight styling creates stress on the follicles and can cause traction alopecia over time. Opt for loose updos with scrunchies instead of elastic bands.
Recommended: Fabric scrunchies, loose styles
Rule 05
Protect from Elements
Before sun exposure, swimming, or workouts, apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner spray. Chlorine and saltwater can dry out and weaken braids — rinse your braids with fresh water immediately after swimming and apply oil while still damp.
Recommended: UV protective braid spray, swim cap
Rule 06
Know When to Remove
Never wear braids beyond 8 weeks. Leaving them in too long causes matting, buildup at the roots, and hair breakage when you remove them. After removal, give your natural hair 1–2 weeks of rest with deep conditioning treatments before your next installation.
Cornrows: 4–8 weeks · Box Braids: 6–8 weeks
